Safety needed at junction

If there’s one thing Cllr Mary Sweeney wants done before she retires as a local councillor it’s to have improvement works carried out at the Abbeyleix/Ballinakill Road junction.

That was the vow she made at County Hall last week, when she called on Laois County Council to improve the junction following another crash at this location recently.

“I’ve brought this up 15 times since I became a councillor, it’s a terribly dangerous junction, a little narrow junction with very little visibility and there have been numerous crashes at it,” she said, adding that she had handed in a garda report on it.

She also said there was a drainage issue at the junction with water flowing over the paths.

“Before I retire I’d like to get something done at this junction,” she said, prompting Cllr Noel Tuohy to lightheartedly inquire: “Are you trying to tell us something, Mary?”

The council said they would investigate the junction, although funding would be required for any works.
