A garda pursuit following a break-in at the Xtravision store in Portarlington ended in two men being apprehended in the next county, in what was one of 21 burglaries to have been committed across Laois within the last week.

The break-in at the home entertainment store on Portarlington’s Link Road occurred in the early hours of Friday, February 20.

Thieves smashed in the window of the premises and stole a number of items, including games for computer consoles, before making their escape.

The gardaí gave chase and pursued the thieves’ vehicle all the way to Nass, where two men were subsequently arrested on the same date.

A garda spokesperson has revealed that the men were from the Dublin area, and the stolen property was recovered.

The burglary was one of 21 recorded by the gardaí within the last seven days, six of which occurred from business premises and the remainder at private residences. The garda spokesperson has confirmed that among the break-ins recorded were eight in Portlaoise, six in Portarlington and three in Mountmellick.

In some cases the premises struck were farm buildings or public houses which were broken into overnight, with power tools and diesel stolen from four farms across the areas of Portlaoise and Mountrath.

In the cases of houses being broken into, the garda spokesperson has revealed that all the houses were targeted during the day and were unoccupied at the time.

No suspicious vehicles were sighted in relation to any of the burglaries, nor were any suspects identified, the spokesperson said, and it was mainly jewellery and cash that was taken from the houses.

The spokesperson has said that the gardaí are not treating the burglaries as connected as there is currently no evidence to link them.

The gardaí are encouraging all premises owners to ensure their property is secured at all times, especially when the buildings are empty, and to keep a lookout for any suspicious individuals or vehicles in the area.
