AN Independent councillor and former general election candidate ein Portarlington has bucked the political trend by deciding to join Fianna Fail.
An Indepnedent on Offaly County Council, Cllr Eddie Fitzpatrick’s application the North Portarlington Fianna Fail Cumman to join the party was accepted and unanimously agreed at a meeting of the North Portarlington Cumman on Friday night last.
This application must now go through a process within the FF structure to be ratified over the next couple of months.
Cllr Fitzpatrick was unavailable for comment when going to press. In statement he said he is looking forward to becoming a member of a political party and hopes his application to join will be agreed widely within the organisation.
Cllr Fitzpatrick was first elected to Offaly County Council in 2004 as a Progressive Democrat and was one of the key players in the Tom Parlon organisation alongside Laois councillor Cllr Paul Mitchell.
In April 2008 he became an Independent when the PDs disbanded. He was re-elected on Offaly County Council in 2009. Cllr Fitzpatrick made a failed Dail bid in 2011 as an Independent, securing 2,544 first preference votes before being eliminated on the sixth count.
