A PORTLAOISE man took exception to the company his ex-girlfriend was keeping and began arguing with another male in the street, last week’s court heard.

Craig Dollard, 9 Mountain View Square, Portlaoise, was charged with being intoxicated and using threatening behaviour in public, at Lyster Square, Portlaoise, on March 19.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that gardaí observed a heated confrontation between the two men at 2.25am. Dollard, who was extremely intoxicated, was extremely abusive and refused to leave the scene.

“There was no choice but to arrest him,” the inspector said.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client had taken too much drink on the night, when he met a lady with whom he had been in a relationship. Ms Fitzpatrick said that Dollard took exception to the company the lady was in and she admitted he had caused considerable difficulty for the gardaí.

“He’s disappointed and not proud of his actions,” she said, adding that Dollard was offering €100 to the court by way of compensation.

Judge Catherine Staines remanded Dollard on continual bail to July 5 for a probation report, with a recommendation that he return with a larger sum of money in the event of a positive report.
