Philip Gannon, of no fixed abode, stole 12 cans of Dutch Gold valued at €12 from Centra, Main Street, Mountmellick, on March 5 this year. When the gardaí were called he became verbally abusive toward them and told them to “f*ck off”. A search of his person subsequently revealed a ten-inch knife.

Gannon has 17 previous convictions.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said his client had a long-standing psychiatric difficulty, but he has now secured himself a place in a psychiatric unit. Mr Meagher said that Gannon had been extremely distressed on the day and had taken drink, leaving him with very little recollection.

The case was put back to October 4, for a probation and psychiatric report.
