A PODIUM dancer in a Portlaoise night club had to curl up into a ball to protect herself from an assault by two women, which was committed after one of the women was asked to desist dancing on the podium next to the injured party.

Louise McStay, Pallas, Ballyfin Road, Portlaoise, and Shelly Delaney, Carlow Road, Stradbally, committed the assault at Egans Nite Club, Main Street, Portlaoise, on September 25 last year.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that the injured party was kicked while she was on the ground and suffered bruising to her back and legs.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said her clients denied kicking the woman, but they accepted an assault had occurred. Ms Fitzpatrick said Delaney had been dancing on the podium next to the professional dancer, but she became a nuisance and was asked to desist. Later at the bar, Delaney thought the podium dancer was making her way toward her and so she assaulted her. When McStay saw her friend on the ground in a tussle she joined in.

Judge Catherine Staines put the matter back to October 4 for a victim impact report and probation report before she considers sentencing. She also ordered the women to have at least €300 compensation each.
