THERE is no funding to make the main road at The Tiles in Abbeyleix safe, Michael Malone, senior executive engineer with Laois County Council has said.

He was responding to Councillor John Bonham who asked at the recent Borris in Ossory electoral area meeting that the council make the road safe. “The road and footpath has slipped to a dangerous level and will collapse if not attended to. The road is way above the level of the land underneath, it won’t be long until it has to be closed off and will become stop and go with traffic lights”.

Mr Malone responded to this stating that “we applied to the NRA for funding. They confirmed at the start of the year that they cannot fund this in 2012. They inspected the site and we have advised them that if this deteriorates during the year we will have to close on lane and depending on the severity possible close the road. LCC Roads Senior Engineer John O Donoghue is making every effort to secure funding from the NRA”.

Councillor Marty Phelan said that “there will be somebody killed there. This is a most urgent notice of motion. It is deadly, we should stop it or put a barrier there”.
