Portlaoise woman was lookout

A PORTLAOISE woman who acted as lookout during a burglary in which both she and a male were arrested has been put on probation.

Charlene Philips, with an address at 70 DeVesci Court, Fairgreen, Portlaoise, was charged with entering a building with intent to commit an offence, at 31 The Willows, Forest Park, Portlaoise, on January 6.

Inspector Dermot Drea gave evidence that gardaí arrived at the house at 8pm, where they discovered two people in the back garden. The window and the back door of the house was smashed, and a male was discovered in the garden wearing gloves and holding a torch. The male admitted that he was going in to burgle the house, while Philips admitted that she was acting as lookout.

Philips has no previous convictions.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said that her client claimed she was not acting as lookout, but she did accept she was present at the scene.

The matter has gone back to May 9 for a probation report.
