AN Errill man arrested for stealing alcohol who then urinated on a chair in the garda station was given the benefit of the probation act at last week’s court.
Matthew Nugent, 7 St Kieran’s, Errill, was charged with theft from Tesco, Portlaoise, on May 20, and criminal damage at Portlaoise Garda Station on the same date.
Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that Nugent stole a bottle of Buckfast from Tesco, and after being arrested and brought to Portlaoise Garda Station he urinated on a chair, valued at €25, which had to be disposed of.
Nugent has 26 previous convictions, six for criminal damage and two for theft.
Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said Nugent had no recollection of the crimes, and he had no compensation to offer the court.
Judge Staines ruled as outlined.
