Extra staff are needed to fix roads in areas that are set to join Portlaoise in the new municipal districts that will be created after the local elections, according to Cllr John Joe Fennelly,

The Fianna Fáil councillor called on Laois County Council to provide additional staff to carry out essential works on the roads in that part of the old Borris-in-Ossory and Luggacurren areas that are now transferring into the new Portlaoise electoral area.

Laois County Council is reorganising its road outdoor staff throughout the County to take account of these new boundaries. “However, there is great concern that there will not be sufficient staff allocated to deal with the additional new roads that are coming in under the Portlaoise central area office.

“Additional staff will be required on an on-going basis for roadworks in the Abbeyleix, Raheen, Shanahoe, Ballinakill, Ballypickas and Spink areas.

“Many residents in these areas have raised this issue with me and it is important that the resources within the County be re-allocated to take account of these areas that would not come under the Portlaoise Central Area Office,” said Cllr Fennelly.

The the outgoing Borris-in-Ossory electoral area councillor said he will be raising this matter at the monthly meeting of Laois County Council.

“Residents in these areas are entitled to the same level of service that applies right throughout the County,” said Cllr Fennelly.
