Alvernia House at St Fintan’s Hospital to be refurbished

An application has been made to Laois County Council to refurbish Alvernia House at St Fintan’s Hospital in Portlaoise.

The HSE has applied to refurbish the south and part of the west block of the house, which is a protected structure. The work will consist of the internal refurbishment of the building, alterations to the existing external walls to provide additional entrances, the replacement and extension of the existing external stairway to roof level, and a new external canopy.

There will also be associated site works, including soft landscaping, lighting, car parking and set down area, as well as new signs at the main entrance to the campus, located on the town’s Dublin Road.

The house, which is a residential centre contained within the hospital grounds, is located to the north of St Fintan’s campus, with the Dublin Road forming the northern side of the boundary of the campus and the Stradbally Road forming the southern boundary.

A decision is due from Laois County Council by February 1, 2014.
