Appeal lodged on Graigue car wash

The owner of a car wash in Graiguecullen has appealed to An Bord Pleanála a decision by Laois County Council to refuse him permission to expand his business.

The council’s decision came after residents of the Portlaoise Road in Graiguecullen objected to the expansion of the nearby car wash. Two separate submissions were made to Laois County Council objecting to an application by JA Boland, Carlow, to install two hand car wash bays for public use along with an office, toilet and store room, at the site on the Portlaoise Road.

One resident of the area, Johnny Mulhall raised concerns over how the new car wash unit would affect his “mentally incapacitated aunt” who suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

“This excessive noise would not be conducive to her wellbeing and mental state of mind,” said Mr Mulhall, also raising concerns over the environmental impact of using chemicals in the car wash.

A further submission was made by Eileen Brennan, who claimed the noise levels from the business are already “beyond reasonableness and fairness”.

Ms Brennan said that for the council to grant permission would be “an oversight of your duty to me as a citizen, who has a constitutional and legal right to enjoy their place of residence”.

A decision is now due from An Bord Pleanala by July 28.
