Ballyroan’s ‘moon crater’

Is Laois County Council prepared to take one small step for Ballyroan, one giant leap for local road repairs?

At the recent Portlaoise Electoral Area committee meeting, Cathaoirleach Cllr Mary Sweeney claimed the Bog Road in Ballyroan had sunk so much it now resembles “a crater on the moon”, and she requested the council upgrade it.

“It’s likened to a crater on the moon at this stage,” she said. “The road is sinking and is extremely dangerous, the junction on the left is very dangerous. It needs urgent remedial action.”

Engineer, Mr Tom O’Carroll agreed there was a 300m section of the road that was out of shape and it will be included on the roads programme for 2014.

“It can be done quickly in the New Year,” said Mr O’Carroll.

The stretch of road in question is at the entrance to Coillte land. Cllr Jerry Lodge said that, as Coillte were “the main culprit”, they should be asked to contribute to the upgrade of the road.
