County hall wants the public to help it catch illegal dumpers as part of the annual drive to clean up Laois.

Now in its 11th year, the very successful Clean Up Laois Week will again happen in conjunction with An Taisce’s National Spring Clean month of April.

This year, the dedicated week in Laois takes place from Monday-Friday 7-11 of April inclusive. Laois County Council would like to encourage everyone to register immediately for this great community initiative which helps make a locality more visually attractive to live in and gives communities a sense of pride in their immediate surrounds.

County hall also hopes the week will help to track down people who are breaking the law.

“Many clean ups consist of items that are illegally dumped at locations throughout the County. We would encourage anyone with information on illegal dumping to contact us on our Freephone Litter Hotline 1800 32 32 30 all information provided is confidential,” says the council.

Bags, gloves and litter picking devices will be distributed to everyone who registers, free of charge, and resulting bags collected at an agreed location. Stocks are limited therefore they will be given out on a first come/first served basis. Application forms were distributed at recent Tidy Towns AGMs, and are available from the reception at county hall or can be emailed on request or a hard copy send out via post. The council’s environment section will accept forms up to end of this week to afford us the opportunity to do up a rota for collection of resulting bags.

To further promote and highlight the great work being carried out during this initiative, groups should consider (with prior permission from those participating) taking a few photographs of their clean ups and emailing them directly to cleanupweek@laoiscoco.ie.

The winning entries will receive a goodie bag containing anti-litter merchandise and a voucher.

To kick-start this campaign the event will be launched today, April, 1 with local community groups to demonstrate their support of the event.
