Cameras needed at Higgs Lane to prevent illegal dumping

Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald has called for cameras to be installed on Higgs Lane in Portlaoise, to prevent black bags of rubbish being dumped.

“Everybody knows it’s very, very bad out there,” she told the last ever meeting of Portlaoise Town Council. “All these black bags of rubbish are being dumped in the area, I would like to see cameras installed.”

“How do you keep on top of the situation without a camera?” seconded Cllr Jerry Lodge.

“The amount of litter being thrown over the railway bridge is mind-boggling,” said Cllr Willie Aird. “People stop at the bridge and dump over bags.”

“It’s getting worse,” said Cllr Fitzgerald.

“Oh, it is getting worse,” agreed Cllr Aird. “I hope the fines for littering will be increased, otherwise the countryside will be decimated.”

The councillors were informed by Colette O’Rourke, environment department, that this area is well known to the litter warden as is prone to littering and illegal dumping. She said that a discarded burst bag was the cause of the most recent littering.
