Three intrepid Laois people are on course to participate in an exciting cycle challenge from La Rochelle in France all the way back to Portlaoise starting tomorrow, Wednesday, September 11.

Mary Callanan, Andrew Cremin and Brian Bonham will spend seven days making their way up the coast of France, in an effort to raise much needed funds for sports and physical activities for people with disabilities in Laois through the Laois Sports Partnership Sports programme ‘SID’ (Sports Inclusion Disability).

The programme is half funded by the Irish Sports Council with the remaining 50% funding having to be raised locally by the Laois Sports Partnership meaning €25,000 has to be raised annually to maintain this valuable service.

The Sports Inclusion Disability (SID) Programme was developed by Laois Sports Partnership and was the first sports partnership to appoint a Disability Officer, Garrett Culliton.

“The funds raised from Cycle for SID allow Laois Sports Partnership to continue to provide sports activities for over 400 people with disabilities in Laois,” said Amanda McArdle, Communications Administrator for Laois Sports Partnership.

Mary, Andrew and Brian will cover approximately 750km over the next week. Starting in La Rochelle will make their way to Cherbourg. From there, they will catch a ferry back to Rosslare. The cyclists will make their way to Tullow for the last night of the challenging adventure. The trio will then complete the last leg of their trip when they travel from Tullow to Carlow, where cycling clubs will meet them to escort them back to Portlaoise.

To support the efforts of the participants, you can visit the ‘Cycle For SID’ Facebook page or www.idonate.ie to donate. LSP are asking all cycling clubs in Laois to get involved in the cycle from the Talbot Hotel in Carlow to Portlaoise town.

You can follow the progress of the three cyclists by read ing their daily blog, including videos and pictures which can be found on the Leinster Express website, Cycle for SID Facebook page and the LSP website.

A raffle will also be held in aid of “Cycle for SID”, which includes prizes such as the Trek racing bike and a round of golf for four people followed by lunch in the Club House in The Heritage, Killenard. Tickets are €20 and can be purchased from the cyclists and the Sports Partnership Office.
