Christmas checkpoints

Extra road checkpoints will be mounted from now until January 5, to deter drunk driving in Laois.

Superintendent Yvonne Lundon says the checkpoints are at undisclosed times and places, praising “responsiblity in the public” that reduced drink driving by 29 percent in the last quarter of 2013.

“For a number of years there has been a very strong drive by the Road Safety Authority and the Gardaí, that it is not acceptable to drink and drive. It is now considered not the done thing. Our aim is not to catch people out, it is to instill responsibility, saving not only their own lives, but the lives of others,” she told the December public Joint Policing committee meeting.

She said speed was now the biggest factor in road deaths, with speed cameras located in and out of towns.

“We must get the message out to slow down, to instill responsible motoring so we can get through Christmas safely and peacefully,” she said.
