Controversy reveals need for hospital strategy

The Minister for Health was challenged to put in place a plan for Portlaoise’s hospital by his own Fine Gael party chairman.

“There is no plan or strategy for this hospital,” said Charlie Flanagan in the Dail.

“I would like the Minister to address that matter...We want assurances and commitments from the Government that the HSE, and the Minister will ensure the delivery of high-quality care in the midlands area,” he said.

Sean Fleming TD said he would not play party politics cuts were made. “It is ironic that around the day of the (Prime Time)programme’s airing, the Department issued the 2014 budget for the Portlaoise hospital, cutting it by €2.76 million,” he said.
