Laois County Council have rejected a call from Portlaoise Town Council to increase free parking in the town from 30 minutes to one hour.
In a written communication from Mr Pat Delaney of the roads department to the town council, it was said that Laois County Council is not in a position to extend the 30 minute parking period.
“There’s no reason they can’t give us one hour,” said Cllr Rotimi Adebari, proposing the motion at County Hall. “The best we can do for businesses is increase the free parking time, especially with Christmas just around the corner.”
“It creates an atmosphere,” agreed Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald. “We should do whatever we can to get back movement on Main Street.”
“There should be no fee for parking at all, to encourage people back there,” opined mayor or Portlaoise, Cllr Willie Aird. “We will write to Laois County Council.”
Cllr Aird went on to say that Main Street is competing with the other side of Portlaoise, where there is complete free parking.
“I don’t accept the (county council’s) answer,” he said.
