Mountmellick will be buzzing over the June bank holiday, with the second Summerfest promising everything from Rose of Tralee entrants to American country music.
The festival starts on Thursday evening May 29 with a visit by the Rose of Tralee Regional Finalists, proudly led by Laois Rose Teresa Brennan.
The Roses will tour the town then join in for a dance at the ‘Beat on the Street’ at the MDA grounds in Irishtown.
On Friday O’Connell Square will host a traditional Farmers Market all day from 9.30am, featuring tasty fare from local food producers.
Saturday will have something for everyone, centred on Patrick Street and the Arts Centre. The fun begins at 4.30pm with a dog show, followed by local clubs giving demonstrations, a barmans race, art, craft and bakery stalls, a childrens fancy dress competition, and Wild West horse riding skills demonstrated by Fosse Mountain Ranch riders from Timahoe.
Also on Saturday Mountmellick Road Runners are holding a family fun 5k race in aid of the Ben & Jake Connolly trust fund, two local young boys who suffer from a rare and serious illness.
On Sunday the town turns country, American country that is, with a Garth Brooks tribute band, and back by popular demand, trad band Abbeyfolk from Abbeyleix.
There will be stetson hats for sale from the Summerfest Committee, and a chance to win a pair of Garth Brooks concert tickets in the raffle. A Barbeque will add to the American atmosphere, while tasty crepes and local arts and crafts will also be on sale.
Organisers have again adopted the family friendly idea of selling wristbands for children for €4 that will allow them unlimited access to bouncy castles and Bumble the Play Bus, along with getting their face painted and having fun with Jeca the Clown.
The committee are inviting owners of American cars, trucks and vintage vehicles to bring them along for display on the day. See Facebook @ Mountmellick Summerfest, email MountmellickSummerfestival@yahoo.ie or call 087-7951042.
