Judge Catherine Staines last week said she would not waste any more of the probation officer’s time, in the case of a Portlaoise woman who had failed to keep her appointments.
The judge instead convicted and fined Tara Kane, with an address at Cottage House, Railway Street, Portlaoise, for the crime of theft, from Mothercare, Timahoe Road, Portlaoise, on March 20.
Kane was convicted at a previous court sitting, with the matter adjourned for a probation report.
At last week’s district court, Kane’s solicitor, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick admitted the probation report was not yet concluded. Ms Fitzpatrick said Kane had missed one appointment with probation as her child had been admitted to hospital; she missed another appointment because she “did not prioritise her appointment with probation”.
“I’m not wasting any more of the probation officer’s time,” declared Judge Staines, fining Kane €200.
“If you come before me again on theft charges, you will go to prison,” the judge warned Kane, “and if you go to prison your children will go into care.”
