Drove car twice with no insurance

A Pakistani national has been fined and disqualified from driving having been caught driving without a licence or insurance on two separate occasions.

Before last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court was Mazhar Iqbal, 20 Moore Street, Rathdowney.

Garda Kieran Mahony gave evidence that he detected Iqbal driving without documents at Ballyroan Road, Abbeyleix, on September 13 last. Iqbal said he would produce his documents at the garda station, but failed to do so.

Garda Mahony stopped him driving again on December 9, and this time Iqbal admitted he had no documents.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client thought he had been insured on the first occasion. He also produced a Pakistani driving licence.

Judge William Early imposed fines of €150 and €120 for the September 13 offence. For the December 9 offence, he imposed fines of €150 and €200, and disqualified Iqbal for two years. Recognisance was fixed for an appeal.
