Drunk man failed to move on

A Portlaoise man who was abusive in the street after being refused entry to a licensed premises has been ordered to complete an alcohol awareness course.

Before last week’s district court in Portlaoise was Barry McStay, with an address at Pallas Little, Portlaoise.

He was charged with being intoxicated, and using threatening or abusive behaviour in public, at Market Square, Portlaoise, on December 16 last year.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that gardaí received a call about a man acting in an aggressive manner. McStay had been refused entry to a nightclub and was using foul language, and he failed to leave the scene when directed by gardaí.

McStay has previous convictions for public order offences.

“You obviously have a problem with drink, are you prepared to do something about it?” Judge Staines asked.

McStay replied that he would.

The judge ordered him to complete the Athy Alternative Project, and the matter was put back to April 3.
