An expectant mother already serving a sentence has been given an additional one month’s jail time for theft.

Martina McDonagh, with an address at 11 Greenmill Lane, Portlaoise, entered Dunnes Stores, Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise, on July 4 last year, where she took clothing worth €94 and left without paying. She was detained by security staff and arrested.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly told the court she has 38 previous convictions, “the vast majority” of which are for theft. She was also in breach of a suspended sentence at the time.

Defence explained that McDonagh, a 27-year-old mother of three with another child on the way, is serving a seven-month sentence with a release date in July.

She was apprehended immediately on the day of the theft, due to the “lack of sophistication on her part”, and the goods were returned.

“She was more desperate than cunning,” said defence. “She has mended her ways, the spell in custody has been a shock to her.”

Judge Catherine Staines imposed a one-month sentence.
