Fatal Portlaoise collision investigation underway

Gardai in Portlaoise are investigating a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred on Portlaoise’s Borris Road.

A man in his 30’s was fatally injured when the van he was driving collided with a wall at about 7.30pm on Friday evening, January 31. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second male who was a passenger in the van was brought to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise with injuries described as not serious.

This stretch of road was closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions were in place for a number of hours.

Motorists have been warned of dangerous conditions for driving due to the stormy weather.

The accident happened on a stretch of road which has been the subject of substantial investment by Laois County Council in recent years. A number of bad bends had been removed although it is unclear whether the scene of this fatal accident was where improvement works have taken place. The Borris Road serves a number of housing estates and two secondary schools.

Gardai wish to appeal for witnesses to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057-8674100, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
