Four candidates elected


Four candidates have been elected to Laois County Council, two of them Sinn Fein, as day two of what’s shaping up to be a marathon count gets underway again today (Sunday) in Portlaoise

The first count in the Portlaoise electoral area, announced late Saturday night, saw Fine Gael’s William Aird top the poll, followed by Fianna Fail’s John Joe Fennelly and Sinn Fein’s Caroline Dwane Stanley.

With a quota of 1,299 for the area, Aird was elected on 1,450, Fennelly 1,374 and Dwane Stanley on 1,348.

Sinn Fein also came good in Graiguecullen-Portarlington, where Aidan Mullins topped the poll. The areas quota was 1,510 and Mullins was elected on a vote of 1,547.

All counts were then adjourned until today.

A first count is still awaited in the Borris-Mountmellick area.
