Garda trade union rights welcomed by Touhy

A Labour party candidate has welcomed the Council of Europe’s decision confirming the rights of Gardaí to participate in their own trade union.

The Portlaoise Abbeyleix area candidate Noel Touhy said the ruling rightly affords Gardai the right to directly negotiate their pay and conditions and further establishes that the Gardai should have full access to the Labour Court and the Labour Relations Commission.

“As a lifelong trade union activist, I believe this landmark decision copper-fastens the rights of the Gardaí and all other frontline services such as prison officers, fire-fighters, nurses and paramedics to participate in a fair, inclusive and unbiased negotiation process as individual unions or as a united group to have their voices heard,” he said.
