‘Great work’ done by area staff during recent stormy weather

The outdoor staff of Laois County Council have been praised for their hard work clearing trees and debris during the recent stormy weather.

Cllr Marty Phelan said that a lot of trees came down and a lot more should come down.

“I compliment the work of the council. We are awful lucky that nobody was killed. The OPW are the biggest culprits of all. I propose writing to the OPW to give a safety audit of trees.”

“There was great work done with the fire services”, added Cllr John King who told the meeting that all of the units were out during the bad weather.

He said that when council engineers don’t have sufficient pumps they call on the fire services, who he said “did tremendous work.”

Cathaoirleach Mary Sweeney said that there was a great response to the storm damage with workers out “morning, noon and night”.

Cllr Willie Aird also congratulated those involved on the work carried out, and asked that the council do a survey on trees on public property.

Cllr Brendan Phelan also complimented the staff.
