Hearing aid wait a ‘disgrace’

Laois-Offaly TD Sean Fleming has branded the treatment of people waiting for hearing aids from the HSE as a disgrace.

Deputy Fleming said he had recently been informed by the HSE that the general waiting list to be called for a hearing aid is at least two and a half years, a disgraceful record that is leaving some of the most vulnerable members of society in a highly precarious position.

“I recently raised this matter with the Minister for Health and this is the official response,” said Deputy Fleming, slamming the two and a half year waiting time.

“This response proves the system has absolutely broken down and is damaging to people’s health and well being,” he asserted.

Deputy Fleming went on to say that many people with hearing difficulties and especially the elderly are being condemned to a period of long silence by the HSE because they cannot be called to be fitted with a hearing aid.

“The cost of going privately is very dear and out of the reach of many people,” he pointed out.

“Finally, the Minister and the HSE need to introduce a bit of humanity in how to deal with people in these situations,” concluded Deputy Fleming.
