A Mountrath woman has been given community service for hitting another woman with her fist and a mobile phone.
Fiona Fitzpatrick, 6 Ruskin Road, Mountrath, was charged with assault at Main Street, Mountrath, on August 14 last year.
Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that the incident involved two women fighting on Main Street. The injured party received “superficial injuries”, after Fitzpatrick hit her with a phone, punched her a number of times, and pulled her hair.
“There was history between them,” explained Insp Farrelly.
Fitzpatrick had one previous conviction, for theft.
Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client had been in a long-term relationship with the now partner of the injured party and there had been “a fractious break-up”.
“Things have now been resolved,” said Ms Fitzpatrick, adding that her client had also been injured on the day.
“We didn’t start it,” said defence.
Judge Staines imposed 150 hours’ community service in lieu of four months in prison.
