Hospital plans ‘a mixed bag for Portlaoise’, claims Stanley TD

New HSE proposals for Portlaoise Hospital are “a mixed bag for Portlaoise”, according to Brian Stanley TD, who claims that while there are some positives, issues regarding core service at the hospital are not addressed.

“The need for a new maternity unit is not even mentioned in Dr Tony O’Connell’s presentation, despite the fact that the facilities are totally inadequate for the high number of births in Portlaoise,” said Deputy Stanley.

“There is no commitment to deal with the lack of out of hours CT scanning availability, which has been raised by the Royal College of Surgeons. The concerns they also highlighted about the inadequate staffing to have the second operating theatre utilised are not addressed.”

Deputy Stanley also said that the amalgamation of Portlaoise into the Dublin Mid Leinster Hospital Group must not lead to the loss of core services or any reduction in the status of Portlaoise.

“I have requested that the Minister for Health clarify these matters now on the future of Portlaoise Regional Hospital,” Deputy Stanley concluded.
