Winning provides instant reward in sport but there was something to was something to savour for the long run for Ballyroan and Abbeyleix District Athletic Club.
Founded just three years ago, the club has grown rapidly to cater for athletes across south Laois. There was a real sense of acheivement for John Joe Carroll who accepted the Sport and Leisure Award sponsored by Laois Sports Partnership.
“We have put in a huge amount of work in the past two and half years - hours and hours of work to promote the club to expand into ares like Durrow, Ballinakill and Cullohill areas where there was no tradition of athletics”, he said.
He is proud of the fact that the club has hosted the fasted 10km in the club in the past two years and has national class athletes as members.
Mr Carroll believes that a big part of the club’s success is down to promoting the club to attract members.
