IDA ‘not off the hook’ - Senator Whelan

The IDA have neglected Laois for the past 30 years, said Labour Senator John Whelan.

“One swallow does not make a summer. It doesn’t get the IDA or this government off the hook, or previous governments, for thirty years of neglect. I do not believe the IDA has ever given Laois its fair hop, when you see job creation in other centres like Athlone. The advantages Laois has have not received the support deserved from IDA and other agencies,” Sen Whelan said, after the opening of Internal Result’s office in the IDA park.

“This is a local success, down to the initiative of the local people involved. They got up, took the risks and turned it into a success,” he said.

Minister Charlie Flanagan says Laois’ future “lies in the small to medium size industry”, rather than big factories.

“Laois has a lot going for it, at the crossroads of Ireland, with road and rail second to none and a skilled workforce. I am anxious that the infrastructural developments keep apace. I am very hopeful that capital funding be made available for the road link between the Abbeyleix and Timahoe roads... next year, with work to commence as soon as possible thereafter. The unemployment rates for Laois are at last coming down, The county council are redoubling their efforts at marketing Laois as an attractive environment in which to do business, and what we are seeing here today is the showcase,” he said.
