Laois charities to benefit from Tesco community funding

Laois charities, community groups and schools are set to benefit to the tune of €1,000 every six weeks, thanks to a new Tesco community fund.

Shoppers are being asked to nominate a good cause using forms instore.

Every six weeks, three charities will be chosen. Each shopper then gets a plastic token at the till, which they use to ‘vote’ for their charity.

At the end of the six weeks, €1,000 will be divided between the three causes, depending on who has the most tokens.

The Kolbe Centre, the Arch Club and Down Syndrome Laois were the first recipients of the fund in Laois, selected by staff of Portlaoise Tesco to introduce the scheme.

The first to be chosen by customers are the Ben and Jake Connolly fund, the Cuisle Centre and St Francis’ school for children with learning disablilities.

“We are delighted to introduce the fund because it is all local charities that will benefit. It is up to the people to come and vote for them. I know the first three charities nominated are over the moon,” she said.
