The average earnings for Laois’ 25 county councillors stands at €27,304 in 2013, €900 higher than their colleagues in Dublin City Council, where 52 councillors serve a population of more than half a million people.
It is higher too than the average for Dun Laoghaire Rathdown of €26,831, where a population of 190,000 are served by 29 councillors.
However it is less than the national average of €30,000, while other midlands councillors earned more; €3,000 more in Carlow, €1,000 more in Kilkenny and €800 more in Kildare, on average in 2013.
Offaly’s 21 county councillors had almost the same average earnings as Laois, at €27,615, but cost Offaly County Council €200,000 less over the course of 2013, at €579,917.
Councillor payments include a salary, called a representational payment, travel and other expenses, a phone allowance, and payments for chairing committees and councils, and attending meetings.
