Laois Hospice money only goes to patient care

All money raised donated to Laois Hospice Foundation goes entirely towards the care of the terminally ill with none spent on expenses, according to chairman Seamus O’Donoghue.

Mr O’Donoghue spoke at the Annual Meeting of Laois Hospice which took place on Friday January 17 in the Killeshin Hotel, Portlaoise.

“In recent times, we have been shocked to read and hear about certain charities, about their exorbitant wages, their top-ups, and their retirement packages.

“I categorically state that no member of Laois Hospice Foundation has received any remuneration or expense since we were founded in 1989. Our monies go directly to the patient’s needs,” he said.

Laois Hospice had a budget of €206,000 for 2013, which was provided entirely by fundraising and donations. Some €132,000 went on providing palliative nursing care in Laois, while €25,000 fully funded the cost of home carers.

The charity donated €30,000 to the Cuisle Centre, a support centre in Portlaoise for people battling cancer. A further €4,000 was spent to provide a bereavement counselling service.

Laois Hospice are also provides half the cost of a palliative care team secretary.

The hospice meets with the HSE every six months to discuss funding. Mr O’Donoghue said that “on a firm committment by the health authorities, following detailed consultation with Laois Hospice, the money is handed over.”

Last September Laois Hospice received €100,000 from the organisers of the Electric Picnic in Stradbally. This donation has been ear-marked to benefit the palliative patients at the Cuisle Centre.

This allowed a pilot study in the months of October, November and December last. During this time a transport service was provided to travel to the homes of those who were unable to attend the Cuisle Centre every day, a service which was not available before.

The HSE is currently reviewing the study, but the feedback from the patients was positive according to Mr O’Donoghue.

Laois Hospice had 211 new referrals in 2013.

Mr O’Donoghue said that the work of Laois Hospice was possible only because of the generosity of the public,

All of their financial affairs can be obtained on the Companies Registration Office website under the heading ‘Laois Hospice Foundation Limited’.
