Laois VEC and TUI talks progressing

TALKS are continuing this week between Laois VEC and the Laois branch of the TUI. Talks began last week after the teachers’ strike, planned for Tuesday November 6 was deferred.

The talks are being held under the auspices of the Labour Relations’ Commission. This is in order to examine the application of Paragraph 6 of the TUI/IVEA Teacher Transfer Agreement with a view to resolving the dispute as soon as possible. The Laois branch of the TUI were unavailable for comment as the talks progress.

This dispute has been rumbling on between Laois VEC and the Laois branch of the TUI since the summer, when it emerged that two teachers were being transferred from Portlaoise College to other centres. A business studies teacher with 19 years service in Portlaoise College was asked to transfer for 11.5 hours to Portlaoise Prison Education Unit, while an English teacher with eight years service was asked to transfer to Portlarington FEC. The dispute has already given rise to two teacher protests outside VEC meetings.
