‘Last resort’ of legal action

Laois County Council must stop sending threatening letters to people over small amounts of money, said Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald at last week’s meeting of the Portlaoise Electoral Area.

“I know a business owner with a little over €200 due on water charges, who received a letter that said the next step was legal action,” she said. “Everything else was up to date, it’s very unfair to send out letters like that. That’s not helping small businesses.”

“It should be the last resort,” agreed Cllr Willie Aird. “Considering the cost imposed on the council, it would be a lot cheaper to ask people to come in, sit down and discuss it. It can be very frightening and upsets people, who haven’t got the wherewithal to pay it.”

Town clerk, Ms Pamela Tynan informed Cllr Fitzgerald that the council’s finance officer is willing to discuss the matter, and had asked Cllr Fitzgerald to furnish specific details.
