Loose horses led to call while driving

A Portlaoise man who used his mobile phone while driving was last week fined €300.

Patrick McDonagh, 142 The Hermitage, Portlaoise, was observed by gardaí committing the offence at Ballymooney, Portlaoise, on October 23 last year.

He had four previous convictions, including failing to wear a seat belt, no tax, and allowing a person under 17 to not wear a seat belt.

“He doesn’t have a very good record with driving,” said Judge Catherine Staines.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said that on the day he had received a call that horses he owned had broken loose, and he used the phone “to make arrangements”.
