Man charged with Ballylinan hijacking

A man has been charged with the hijacking of a woman’s car in Ballylinan last week, and will be appearing this week in Cloverhill District Court.

A 31-year-old local woman was sitting in her car outside a shop in Ballylinan, near the Laois/Kildare border, at around 9pm on Monday, December 9, when she was approached by a man wearing a balaclava. The woman told gardaí she thought the man was carrying a shotgun.

The woman was threatened by the man and ordered to leave the vehicle, which was a silver Toyota Corolla. The man drove off in the car, leaving the woman shaken but unharmed.

The car was later found burnt out in Kildangan, near Monasterevin in County Kildare.

A garda spokesperson has revealed that it is not believed the car was used in any subsequent crimes following the hijacking.

A man was arrested on Thursday, December 12, under section 13 of the Offences Against the State Act. He was brought to the Portlaoise Garda Station for questioning.

The garda spokesperson has confirmed that on Friday, December 13, the man’s period of detention was extended by a further 12 hours.

The 34-year-old man, who is from Kildare, has since been charged with the hijacking of a vehicle.

He was brought before a special sitting of Portlaoise District Court on Saturday, December 14.

The man has now been remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court this Thursday, December 19.
