A former homeless Laois man now residing in Portarlington appeared before last week’s district court in Portlaoise charged with burglary and the stealing of a car.

Luke O’Grady, with an address listed at 5 McMahon’s Flats, French Church Street, Portarlington, is currently in custody until March 6 on burglary and theft charges.

At last week’s court, Garda John McCarthy brought new charges against O’Grady of burglary and the unauthorised taking of an MPV, at Rinuccini, Dublin Road, Portlaoise, on April 20 last year.

Garda McCarthy said there were young people asleep upstairs in the house on the night and the door had been left open.

Defence for O’Grady, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick requested a statements order and the matter was put back to March 6.

The outstanding charges against O’Grady are theft from Main Street, Portlaoise, on December 25 last year; burglary at the Rosecourt Filling Station, Cooltederry, Portarlington, on January 13; and entering a building with intent to commit a crime, at Sandy Lane, Portarlington, on January 18.
