Man knocked unconscious in unprovoked assault in the street

A Portlaoise man who allegedly knocked out another man in the street in an unprovoked attack was charged with assault causing harm at last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

Before the court was Patrick McInerney, with an address at 376 Market Mews, Maryborough Village, Portlaoise.

He was charged with the alleged offence at Market Square, Portlaoise, on May 6 this year.

Inspector Kieran Keyes outlined the facts. The injured party was out socialising in the town centre and in the early hours of the morning went to the taxi rank. A group came along and tried to jump the queue, and when the injured party intervened he got a box to the nose in a totally unprovoked attack. The man was knocked to the ground where he lay unconscious.

Insp Keyes handed in to the court a medical report on the injured party, and photographs. He told defence, Mr Philip Meagher, that there was no CCTV footage of the incident. The matter was put back to July 24.
