Misdirection and roads to nowhere in Portlaoise

Some road signs in Portlaoise are pointing the wrong way, while some roads just lead to nowhere.

Those were the directions given at the recent meeting of Portlaoise Town Council in County Hall, during a motion raised by Cllr Rotimi Adebari.

“There’s a left turn (on the Stradbally/Carlow Road) that leads to nowhere,” he said. “The Portlaoise retail park is on that road and people are coming to Portlaoise for shopping, for visitors to the town they don’t know where that road leads.”

He called on Laois County Council to install signs before the turning to the southern circular route for motorists coming from the Stradbally/Carlow Road indicating where the road leads.

He said this was the second time he had raised the motion, and hoped the situation would not be the same in a year’s time.

However, Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald warned of increasing the traffic flow along the route onto the Meelick Road.

“On the Meelick Road there’s no footpath or no protection, we’d want to be very careful about directing traffic onto that road,” she said.

Area engineer Farhan Nasiem replied that the circular route is not completed yet and the council will look at the option of putting a sign for the business park there.

“There are a few signs in town pointing the wrong way,” added Cllr Caroline Dwane, “like the one on the Ballyfin Road that’s pointing towards Mountmellick.”
