If ever evidence were needed that communities needed a hub to make progress well the Mountmellick Development Association (MDA) is it.
The MDA is Mountmellick’s focal point from where many projects grow and become part of the fabric of the town and county.
The MDA’s Voluntary Board of Directors were awarded that Community Services and Support Award for the progress in job creation and the promotion of local heritage and culture.
Paul Dempsey, MDA Director, accepted the award. He said the MDA was founded in the 1980s to help create jobs but it also helps disadvantaged young people. Organising local events is another function. This year was busy and benefical.
“People have more time in the recession as we witnessed this year with our Gathering event. We got over 100 volunteers to give their time for two weeks. A lot of those volunteers are no committees working on various other projects,” he told the Leinster Express.
