No funding for local road repairs

There is no funding for traffic calming measures outside Ballacolla on the Rathdowney Road, councillors heard at the recent Borris in Ossory electoral area meeting.

Cllr Marty Phelan, who asked for the measures to be put in place, said that traffic there is travelling way too fast.

“There are two trucks after going off the road already and more will go off the road - they are going too fast. There is a playing field there, a community centre and a school. There will be someone killed or hurt there, this is an absolute priority. There are young lads playing at the pitch there. It needs flashing lights to slow down the trucks coming off the motorway”.

He was told by acting senior executive engineer Brenda Cuddy that there is no funding in the 2013 budget but the road will be included for consideration as part of their road marking review.

There is also no funding in the 2013 budget to repair barriers at Aghaboe Cross. Councillors were told by acting senior executive engineer Brenda Cuddy that this can be included for consideration when preparing the 2014 budget. Cllr Marty Phelan who asked for the barriers to be repaired said that the road there is in bad condition. “It is very serious at Aghaboe Cross, it is across from the Post Office and on the Roscrea to Kilkenny Road, it is a shocking busy road. Anywhere you have patched is very successful”.
