No funding for safety measures on ‘death trap’ of Ballyfin Road

The Ballyfin Road in Portlaoise is “a death trap” where there are constant car accidents, but Laois County Council say there is no funding available to introduce traffic calming measures.

That was the news at County Hall recently, when Cllr Jerry Lodge requested that traffic calming measures be introduced on the Ballyfin Road from the roundabout to the Mountmellick Road junction.

In a written reply from PJ Dempsey, it was said that the road design office has reviewed this road and its associated accident history and in their opinion it is unlikely that funding will be available for traffic calming measures within the coming years.

“What money are we talking about, a ramp or just rumble strips? To say the money won’t be available is too easy to dismiss,” declared Cllr Lodge. “People are travelling too fast as they see a straight road down. I’d ask the engineer to give us various options, the cost of ramps and the cost of rumble strips.”

“In that particular area are two roundabouts and there are constant car accidents there,” said Cllr Caroline Dwane. “It’s a death trap.”
