A one hour documentary in association with Horse Racing Ireland entitled ‘Power in the blood - the story of the Irish thoroughbred’ will be aired tonight Monday, August 25 on RTE One.

The documentary is described as providing a ‘deep insight into Ireland’s most successful international sport and the billion euro Irish thoroughbred industry’.

The piece features visits to the National Stud, Goffs Bloodstock Sales House, Gilltown Stud and the Curragh based Irish Equine Centre.

Two of the top three stallions in Europe are based in Kildare with Invincible Spirit in The Irish National Stud and Sea The Stars who stands in Gilltown Stud in Kilcullen.

And both make an appearance in the documentary.

Michael O Rourke, Director of Marketing and Communications at Horse Racing Ireland, which is located in Newbridge, described the programme as ‘giving viewers a greater understanding of the sport’.

“As breeders, trainers, jockeys and vendors of thoroughbred horses, the Irish have no equal in the world,” he said

Power in the Blood will be broadcast three weeks in advance of Irish Champions Weekend at Leopardstown and the Curragh, which will be the highest quality flat racing ever staged in Ireland.

“This programme will give viewers a greater understanding of the thoroughbred horse and enhance their enjoyment of this great sporting and social occasion.
