Portlaoise parish recorded what it described as a “healthy surplus” of €381,900 in 2013 with an income of €673,169.

However recurring income dipped slightly from the €678,699 figure of 2012.

Expenditure for 2013 came to €291,269, again slightly reduced on the previous year which came to €293,529.

Commenting on the publication of the financial accounts, parish priest Msgr John Byrne paid tribute to the generosity of their parishioners. “It is a testament to the generosity of our parishioners that we can report a very healthy financial situation for our parish,” he said.

The development fund for 2013, stood at €173,340, slightly down on the 2012 total of €181,232. The accounts show that the parish lotto was a significant earner, bringing in €172,445, again slightly down on 20012, when there was an income of €202,146. However, this was offset somewhat by the tax relief on donations of €25,836, for which there was no income in 2012.

The contributions of the offertory collection are sufficient to take care of the ordinary running costs of the parish.

Fr Byrne noted that the development fund and lotto make up the bulk of their surplus. “This enables us to pay for the school site (€1.25 million) without excessive borrowing,” he said.

The priests of the parish only receive payment from the specific collections for priests. Currently parish priests receive €1,950 per month and curates €1,800, a 12 per cent decrease on the previous year.
