Pastoral centre set for former national school in Ballylinan

The corridors of the former national school in Ballylynan could be set to once more ring with the sound of children’s voices, with an application made to convert the building into a community and pastoral centre.

The Arles Ballylynan Killeen and Pastoral Centre Development Committee have applied to Laois County Council for permission to change the use of the former St Patrick’s NS on Main Street, Ballylynan, to a community and pastoral centre, along with all associate works.

In their application, a letter from architect, Mr Keith Graham explains that the school dates from 1934 and only ceased to operate as a school in September last year. Now the local parishes, represented by Fr Brian Kavanagh, wish to convert its use to a community and pastoral centre.

The committee are exempt from the requirement of having to pay a planning fee.

Mr Graham said he hopes the council will grant permission, as the centre “has huge social and local benefit” for the community.

A decision is now due from Laois County Council by February 11.
