Portlaoise has been axed from the Dublin to Cork bus service, leaving the county with no bus service to Cork or the south, effective from September 15.

Bus Eireann have claimed jobs were at risk if they didn’t ensure a competitve journey time.

They said the Route X8 was a commercial route that receives no funding from the State.

“The majority of customers have asked for shorter journey times, limited stop services and direct connections to Dublin Airport and we must meet that demand. If we don’t meet the demand from our customers then the route and associated jobs are at risk,” she said,

The National Transport Authority will provide a replacement bus service from Portlaoise to Urlingford and Cashel.

Sinn Fein TD, Brian Stanley accused the state run company of chasing private operators on inter city and airport routes.

“There has been a lot of waffle about utilising public transport more, but the only way to do that in provincial towns is to provide a bus service.”

While Fine Gael’s Charlie Flanagan said passengers must not be inconvenienced by the changes. He called on the NTA to run any service in tandem with X8 service so passengers could avail of public transport to Cork.
